How Long Does Fruit Last In The Freezer

But, what do we do if we want to enjoy sweet and juicy fruits in autumn and winter?

Well, we freeze it of course. Freezing fruit is a great way to extend the shelf life of your favorite natural sweets.

By freezing fruit, we can enjoy seasonal fruit right the way through the year.

However, if you’ve never frozen fruit before, you might be wondering how to do it or even how long fruit lasts in the freezer. If you need either of those questions answered, you’ve come to the right place!

In today’s post, I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about freezing fruit including how to make your fruit last for up to nine months. Let’s get started!

Can You Freeze Fresh Fruit?

Despite what some people think, you can freeze fruit.

You’ll find that most grocery stores and supermarkets stock frozen fruit already. What makes things even better is that it doesn’t matter what type of fruit you want to freeze.

It doesn’t matter if you love bananas, strawberries, blackberries, or blueberries, we can freeze any type of fruit.

The only thing that might differ from fruit to fruit is how we freeze it. Generally speaking, there is an optimal way to pack and freeze whole fruits.

How Long Can You Keep Frozen Fruit?

Now you know freezing fruit is a possibility, let me answer the main question that brought you to this post. Frozen fruit will last in a freezer for an extended period of time.

Typically, frozen fruit will last up to 10 months before you might want to consider throwing it out. If you want to enjoy your frozen fruit the most, I recommend eating it within six to nine months.

After six to nine months, the fruit will still have most of its flavor and nutritional value.

When you’re ready to use your fruit, all you have to do is thaw it and use it how you like. You’ll find that frozen fruit tastes best in smoothies and ice cream.

How Do You Freeze Fruit?

Freezing fruit isn’t too difficult but there are a few steps you need to follow. Primarily, you need to make sure your fruit is effectively stored so that it doesn’t fall all over your freezer.

To make your life easier, I’ve outlined the steps you’ll take to freeze fruit below.

1. Buy Your Fruit

The first thing you need to do is buy your fruit. If you have one nearby, I recommend heading to your local farmers’ market. Here, you can select the very best locally grown fruits and find some bargains.

If you can, only pick out ripe fruits because more flavor will be maintained through freezing. Remember, you can freeze any type of fruit so make sure you pick the fruits you love most.

2. Prepare The Fruit

Next, you’re going to want to prepare the fruit for the freezer.

This includes washing and cutting the fruit and placing them in freezer bags or containers. Keeping your fruit in freezer bags or containers will prevent freezer burn.

To prepare your fruit, follow these steps!

1. Wash your fruit in a colander under cold running water. Once clean, leave them on the side to dry.

2. Slice your fruit into more manageable pieces. This will make it easier for you to thaw the fruit when the time comes. Smaller fruits like berries don’t have to be chopped.

3. Freeze Your Fruit

1. Place your fruit on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Place the fruit in one single line.

2. Freeze your fruit on the baking sheet for up to 3 hours. This will prevent the fruit from sticking together when you put it in your freezer containers.

3. Once frozen, move the fruit into your freezer-safe bag or container and put the fruit in your freezer.

4. All done! Your fruit is now safely stored in your freezer. It will be safe to eat for the next 10 months.

How To Avoid Freezer Burn?

Freezer burn is a condition that causes discoloration and damage to frozen food. It is usually caused by evaporation. More often than not, freezer burn occurs because food has been inadequately packed.

Luckily, avoiding freezer burn is quite easy. To avoid freezer burn, simply make sure your fruit is suitably stored in a freezer bag or container. Ideally, you’ll use a freezer bag to store your fruit.

Using a freezer bag is a good idea because you can squeeze more air out of a bag. By removing more air from the bag, you reduce the risks of freezer burn.

How To Thaw Frozen Fruit?

When you come to use your frozen fruit, you need to thaw it before you can do anything with it. That is of course unless you want to use some frozen berries as ice cubes in your cocktail.

Thawing frozen fruit is easy. All you have to do is place your freezer bag or container in a refrigerator.

The fruit will then take a couple of hours to thaw out. Alternatively, you could place the container or bag in a bowl of cold water.

It’s worth noting that frozen fruit tends to have a different texture. It can be softer so consider using it in a recipe that calls for it to be mushed.

Final Thoughts

Frozen fruit can easily last up to 10 months in a freezer. However, you probably want to eat your frozen fruit after six to nine months because this is when it will still have plenty of flavors and nutritional value.

In this post, I’ve also shown you how to freeze fruit and how to thaw it. All that’s left for you to do is follow the steps I’ve given you and freeze your favorite fruits.
